Suuma's Takeaways from Week 6
By: Suuma, NFL Originator
1. Wow, Mike Macdonald!
What a masterclass. Thirty-eight-year-old Mike Macdonald just put on a defensive clinic against one of the most well-coached offenses in football. Seattle completely suffocated Jacksonville — a team that had quietly been one of the most efficient rushing units through five weeks — and made Trevor Lawrence look uncomfortable from start to finish.
The numbers tell the story: 7 sacks, 17 QB hits, 7 tackles for loss, 4-for-16 on third down, 4.0 yards per play, and zero trips to the red zone — all season-worst marks for the Jaguars. The Seahawks erased the run game entirely and got relentless pressure without selling out for it. Every dropback felt hurried, every pocket constricted.
And the context makes it even more impressive. The Seahawks haven’t been healthy since the second quarter of Week 2. Against Jacksonville, they were missing S Julian Love, CB Devon Witherspoon, CB Riq Woolen, and DL Derrick Hall — all starters. Yet the structure held, the tackling was clean, and the effort never dipped.
Even last week’s loss to Tampa Bay — when Baker Mayfield went supernova — looks more like an outlier than a red flag. Week to week, this has been one of the most disciplined, well-prepared defenses in the league. If Seattle can finally get healthy, Macdonald isn’t just building another tough unit — he’s quietly laying the groundwork for what could become the next elite defense in football.
2. Drake Maye is a top-five quarterback — already
Go ahead and try to name five quarterbacks you’d rather have for the next five years. Good luck. Because what Drake Maye is doing right now isn’t just a sophomore leap — it’s a full-blown quantum leap.
Through six weeks, Maye ranks 3rd in EPA per dropback and 6th in success rate, despite throwing to a group of pass-catchers that would - for the most part - struggle to start elsewhere: a still-recovering Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, Demario Douglas, and Mack Hollins. That’s not a supporting cast; that’s a stress test.
And yet, Maye’s tape is electric. He’s delivering deep shots with veteran-level timing, layering throws between zones, and operating with a confidence that makes New England’s offense — for the first time in years — actually feel modern. Some of his best throws didn’t even count: a 50-yard sideline bomb to Hollins on 3rd & 28 that should’ve drawn DPI, and two absolute bucket throws wiped out by ticky-tack OPI calls.
This isn’t hype. This is real quarterbacking. Drake Maye is already one of the ten best QBs in football, and if you’re building a franchise for the next half decade, there’s maybe a handful of names — maybe — you’d take over him.
3. The 49ers defense is unraveling
Fred Warner’s gruesome ankle injury — broken and dislocated — isn’t just devastating for the player; it’s a death blow to the structure of San Francisco’s defense.
Coming into 2025, the 49ers were already in transition. They had Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, two blue-chip anchors, and then… a lot of patchwork. Pass rushers Bryce Huff and Yetur Gross-Matos (now out with a hamstring) have been solid, but beyond them, the talent drop-off is severe. Since Bosa’s ACL tear, San Francisco has struggled mightily to generate consistent pressure.
Warner was the heartbeat — the rare linebacker who’s equally dominant against the run and the pass, capable of matching routes in coverage and orchestrating the entire defense pre-snap. He’s the communicator, the adjuster, the reason their exotic rotations work. Without him, everything collapses.
The numbers back it up: the 49ers currently rank 27th in defensive success rate, and that’s with Warner playing most of the early stretch. Without him, there’s no spine, no voice, no stabilizer. On paper, this is now a bottom-five defense — and on film, it might look even worse. Right now, it’s hard to see how they stop a nosebleed, let alone a functioning NFL offense.
