Draftkings Week 9 - Chalk, Play, Fade

aaron jones.png

For each week's Draftkings slate, I will give a chalk and tournament play. I will also provide a player that I am fading as well. Before I go into this week's picks, I will give a little definition of chalk and tournament play.

A chalk pick is a player that will be highly owned across most all contests. Typically, this might be because of a low price, a great situation, or a combination of both. These plays are best for cash games (50/50s and head to heads) but can also be used for tournaments.

A tournament or GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool) are contests that have payouts weighted heavily towards the top. The most famous one is the weekly Millionaire contest that DraftKings has on most NFL slates. Hopefully, we can find a player at smaller ownership, thus increasing the likelihood of a unique lineup and, if the player hits, the potential for a huge payout.

This week on Edge Rush, Kris Abbott, ClevTA, and Hitman break down every single game of the Week 9 slate and give their opinions on sides, totals, and spreads they feel strongly about.

Last Week's Plays

Chalk- Raheem Mostert- With Ezekiel Elliot being ruled out later in the week, Tony Pollard became a massive chalk play and took ownership away from other players. Raheem Mostert ended up at almost 20% owned in double-ups, which is chalky but not as much as I thought he could be.

Tournament Play- Ken Walker - Ken Walker was much more chalky than I thought he would be.  He ended up around 45% in double-ups and 21% in GPPs and could have done much better.

Fade- Kyle Pitts-  Well, it was bound to happen at some point. Kyle Pitts had a massive game at 19 points and was essential if you wanted to get to the top of GPPs.

Week 9 Selections

Chalk

Aaron Jones- Aaron Jones sits in a beautiful matchup against Detroit this week and is at $7,400. Jones is already projected north of 20% ownership and will probably be more when players start to build lineups. Jones has had 17 and 24 touches in the last two games and still has a large share of the backfield, even with AJ Dillion getting carries. Detroit opponents have averaged over 150 rushing yards per game which is 3rd worst in the league. Jones will be in some of my lineups this week.

Tournament Play

Gabe Davis- With six teams on bye, this week's ownership will be much more condensed as there are fewer players to choose from. But there is one low-owned play that surprised me. Gabe Davis is the perfect GPP type of player. He can win weeks with just a few catches or give you a solid goose egg. At $6,900, almost no one is using him, as Davis is projected for less than 5% ownership. Meanwhile, his opposite WR, Stefon Diggs, is projected to be the highest owned WR on the slate. While it's not sure, the Jet's top cornerback Sauce Gardner could be on Diggs, which should get Davis some more looks from Josh Allen. With a 28-team implied total, Davis is in a perfect spot to blow up this week.

Fade

Cooper Kupp - Cooper Kupp is too expensive for this slate, even at his reduced number of $8,900. I would rather have Stefon Diggs, who is $500 less and is projected for around the same amount of points and ownership. The Rams have been struggling mightily and have a team total of 18 points. At his price, Kupp needs to have a huge game to pay off, and to boot, this week, he's hurt. I've been on Kupp and the Rams stack a few times this season, and it has yet to pay off. This is a week we can let others take the dive on a game with Tampa Bay that projects to be a slog with an over-under sitting at 42.5, which is one of the lowest on the slate.
