Over the two days of racing, that is $146 in bets and $168.71 in winnings. I refuse to be discouraged that my opinions on Saturday ended up being awful. On to the next!

Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Season brings racing back to Southern California today through the first weekend of December. Friday’s opening card features eight races–four each on dirt and turf. Overall, they have nice fields lined up. The first post is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.

Race 1. The first three races feature the smallest fields of the day. I am going to anchor a Pick 3 through the Bob Baffert trainee 2 American Refugee in the second race. The horse has not hit the board in its two lifetime starts, but he will benefit from a significant drop in class today and a big-time jockey upgrade to Flavien Prat. Two recent works hint at a slight shift in this horse’s gears and that he could be sitting on a big effort. I will use all but 4 First Point in the first leg, who I give only the slimmest of chances at taking the opener. In the third race, I will punch the “ALL” button with the hope that 5 Tangledupingrey upsets at a price.
Bet: 50 cent Pick 3 1-3,5-7/2/1-5 $15 total

Race 4. The pace projection for this race shows a definitive advantage for 1 Multi Platinum. After a grueling stretch from August through the first week of October, this horse is finally rested up and gets jockey Juan Hernandez back in the irons, who rode him to his lone career victory.
Bets: $2 Win-Place on 1; $1 Exacta key box 1/3,4,6,9 $12 total

Race 5. Irish import 8 Percolate won back in September at Saratoga against maiden claiming company. He steps up in class to face winners for the first time here. Jockey Umberto Rispoli retains the mount. The horse likes the turf at Del Mar and could make a big stretch run today at a price.
Bet: $2 Across on 8 $6 total

Race 6. Five of the entrants in this field have not tried going a mile on dirt. Breeding suggests that 8 Leyas Candy should take simply fine to the distance. I like the post draw and see a clean trip for him under jockey Juan Hernandez.
Bets: $2 Win-Place on 8; $1 Exacta key box 8/5,6,9-11 $14 total

Race 7. Non-graded stakes company here for 3-year-olds going a mile on the grass. I will lean on breeding again, putting the John Shirreffs-trained 1 Clutch Hitter on top. After debuting on dirt, they made the switch to grass and won over this same course in July. After a fourth-place finish stretching out to 8.5 furlongs, Shirreffs wisely cuts back to what looks like his best distance. 6 St Anthony adds blinkers for the first time and gets jockey Flavien Prat in an interesting development. 7 Time to Party gets the trainer/jockey combo of George Papaprodromou and Joe Bravo today and is another candidate to outrun his odds.
Bets: $2 Win-Place on 1; $1 Exacta key box 1/2,5-7 $12 total

Race 8. Trainer Ricky Agarie debuted 4 Awesome Donna last month at Saratoga on grass. But today’s theme–you guessed it, breeding–tells me this horse wants to run all day on dirt. Couple that with the largest class drop in the field, and we have all the makings for an upset in the last race on the card.
Bet: $2 Across on 4 $6 total

All told, today’s total to play Del Mar is $65, a modest amount for entertainment with the possibility of some return on investment. As always, I encourage you to use my analysis and picks in conjunction with your own handicapping to inform your opinions. And most importantly: best of luck playing the races!
