Whether you’re a recreational bettor or pro bettor, you probably understand how Teaser bets work in football. You select 2+ teams and each of your teams receive 6 points in their favor. For example, a -7 favorite becomes -1 and a +7 underdog becomes +13. All legs of your teaser must win in order for you to cash your bet. Most teaser plays are considered a sucker bet or a -EV play, but there is a type of teaser that pro bettors use – the Wong teaser.
What is a Wong Teaser?
The Wong Teaser originated from gambling author, Stanford Wong. Wong believed focusing on teaser legs that move through two key numbers will drastically improve his edge. In other words, he wanted his teaser bets to include teams that were favored between 7.5 and 8.5 points and underdogs between 1.5 and 2.5 points. With the additional 6 points in his teams’ favor, each of those scenarios will move through 7 and 3, key numbers in the NFL.
Are they profitable?
After Wong’s findings, the Wong Teasers were being used by bettors everywhere, which caused the sportsbooks to adjust. A typical 6-point teaser used to be priced at +100, but now it’s difficult to find anything better than -120. Assuming a -120 price, you would need each leg to hit at a 74% clip to breakeven. In Wong’s research, he found that teasing through 3 and 7 resulted in a winning leg 76% of the time. Although it’s now more difficult, they can still be profitable.
Does this work in college football?
You want to avoid teasing in college football. Points aren’t as valuable in college as they are in the NFL and that is due to the high variance in the college game. The additional points can be very attractive for your wager, but stay away from teasing college football.
Let’s Place a Wong Teaser for Week 3
There are a few games that meet the Wong criteria this week and I’m looking at two road dogs. Keep in mind that since teasers are placed at the same book, you can’t shop around for the best individual price for each leg. Currently, on DraftKings, the Packers are +2.5 and the Falcons are sitting at +2. Let’s lock in Packers +8.5 and Falcons +8 for our Wong Teaser.
Good luck this week!
